In the following passage from Great Astronomers by Robert Stewall Ball, the author states that he will trace the developments in astronomy from the time of Ptolemy to the nineteenth century. Based on the content and style of the excerpt, what kind of audience did Ball primarily have in mind when he was writing this book? The history of astronomy thus becomes inseparable from the history of the great men to whose labours its development is due. In the ensuing chapters we have endeavoured to sketch the lives and the work of the great philosophers, by whose labours the science of astronomy has been created. We shall commence with Ptolemy, who, after the foundations of the science had been laid by Hipparchus, gave to astronomy the form in which it was taught throughout the Middle Ages. We shall next see the mighty revolution in our conceptions of the universe which are associated with the name of Copernicus. We then pass to those periods illumined by the genius of Galileo and Newton, and afterwards we shall trace the careers of other more recent discoverers, by whose industry and genius the boundaries of human knowledge have been so greatly extended. Our history will be brought down late enough to include some of the illustrious astronomers who laboured in the generation which has just passed away. A. students specializing in the study of astronomy B. people with a casual interest in astronomy C. scientists and mathematicians working with astronomers D. geologists and cartographers

The best and most correct answer among the choices provided by the question is the third choice or letter C.

Scientists and mathematicians working with astronomers are kind of audience did Ball primarily have in mind when he was writing the book.

Which events are part of the road of trials in Odysseus’s heroic quest? Check all that apply. joining the Trojan War fleeing the Lotus-Eaters fighting the Sirens facing Charybdis and Scylla battling the Suitors learning humility and patience being reunited with Penelope

Answer:

  • fleeing the Lotus-Eaters
  • fighting the Sirens
  • facing Charybdis and Scylla

Explanation:

Odyssey is one of the two main epic poems of Ancient Greece, attributed to Homer. It is a sequence of the Iliad, another work credited to the author, and is a fundamental poem in the Western canon. Historically, it is the second - the first being the Iliad itself - the work of Western literature.

The poem is divided into three major parts:

First part: Telemachus son of Ulysses, following the advice of the goddess Athena, leaves Ithaca occupied by the suitors at the hand of his mother Penelope in search of news of his father

Part Two: This part recalls the last navigation of Ulysses, who decides to leave the nymph Calypso and return to Ithaca. After eighteen days sailing, he faced a terrible storm, sent by Poseidon, who threw him on the coast of the Feacians. Nausicaa, the daughter of the king of the country, Alcinous, meets the shipwrecked man and takes him to the palace of his father, who receives him generously. During a banquet offered in his honor, Ulysses hears a bard sing the episodes of the Trojan War and, unable to hide his identity any longer, confesses who he is and relates his adventures. He begins by talking about his travels since the end of the Trojan War, the clashes with Cyclops, cannibals and the sorceress Circe, as well as the underworld, mermaids, and nymph Calypso.

third part: after that the action of the Odyssey is resumed, and Ulysses returns to Ithaca. Disguised as a beggar, he meets his son Telemachus (already back) and plot the persecution of the suitors to the throne of Ithaca. Still disguised, he arrives at his palace without anyone recognizing him except his dog and his old mistress. It is only when Penelope says that she will marry the one who was able to use the bow of Ulysses that he makes himself known, massacring the suitors. The epic concludes with the meeting of Ulysses and Penelope.

The character is confident about something. The character is confused about something. The character is happy about something.

The correct answer is:

I say this because when you're walking, or driving, and there's a fog, you can't really see everything. You have to turn on your head lights or walk carefully because you can't fully see what's in front of you.

Explain in at least 200 words the tone of the first American Crisis pamphlet. Use evidence from the text to support your response.

The American Crisis is a collection of articles written by Thomas Paine during the American Revolutionary War. The pamphlet constitutes Paine’s constant support for an independent and self-governing America through many crises of the Revolutionary War.  The first part, written on December 23rd, 1776, has a tone of passion and inspiration. There is also a tone of seriousness, as Paine tries to illustrate the situation at hand. He is emphasizing the seriousness behind his passion for encouraging America against the Britain rule, which many people thought was tolerable enough for them and that an attempt at gaining independence was incoherent. Many emotions were poured into this writing as Paine related to his people, another technique he used to persuade the soldiers to fight on.  “The Crisis” was so well-written and inspiring that it was read to the troops at Valley Forge by George Washington to help motivate them to keep fighting for the independence that was rightfully deserved. Altogether,

Thomas Paine had multiple strong tones in “The American Crisis” that helped the soldiers in the Revolutionary War regain the motivation and strength they needed to push themselves to the limits, and to win the independence that Paine was so passionate about.
