What was the significance of Luther’s translation of the Bible into German? A. Only the very educated people could read the Bible. B. Ordinary people could read the Bible, and no longer had to rely on the Church to interpret it for them. C. Only the priests would be able to read and interpret the Bible and they could charge money for those services. D. Scholars became more interested in studying the Bible.

Answer: B. Ordinary people could read the Bible, and no longer had to rely on the Church to interpret it for them.

Latin had been the traditional language of instruction before the Reformation. Masses and other religious services were only administered in this language, which meant that many people were unaware of the meaning of the liturgy or the words in the Bible. Translating the Bible into German brought the sacred text closer to the people. It also gave rise to other religious denominations which emphasized the importance of testimony or personal experience over dogma and ritual.

Which activity would be forbidden in Nazi Germany? A. organizing a march in support of the government B. informing on a neighbor who made remarks against the ruling party C. publishing a newspaper editorial that criticizes the country's leaders D. launching a social club that promotes Nazi ideals

The correct answer is C.

Publishing a newspaper editorial that criticizes the country's leaders would be strictly prohibited in Nazi Germany because of the censorship.

Censorship ensured that Germans could only see and hear what the Nazis wanted them to read to and to see, in other words, people were brainwashed into obeying the Nazis and idolizing Hitler.

All media were under such control and scrutiny that only the ideas and values of the Nazis were heard and seen by the masses. All aspects of media, culture and the arts were censored and used for the Nazi propaganda.

The Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, made sure that newspapers could only print stories favorable to and approved by the Nazis. Any kind of anti-Nazi critic was dealt with immediately and the author killed or put into a concentration camp.

Why does Senator Beveridge believe the Philippines and China are important to the United States? A. He does not want to establish American colonies in the Philippines and China. B. He believes China can be a military ally because of its geographic location. C. He believes that trading with markets in Asia can help the US economy grow.

Answer:

C. He believes that trading with markets in Asia can help the US economy grow.

Explanation:

Mr. President, the times call for candor. The Philippines are ours forever, "territory  belonging to the United States," as the Constitution calls them. And just beyond the  Philippines are China's illimitable markets. We will not retreat from either. We will not  repudiate our duty in the archipelago. We will not abandon our opportunity in the  Orient. We will not renounce our part in the mission of our race, trustee, under God, of  the civilization of the world. And we will move forward to our work, not howling out  regrets like slaves whipped to their burdens, but with gratitude for a task worthy of our  strength, and thanksgiving to Almighty God that He has marked us as His chosen people, henceforth to lead in the regeneration of the world.

Explain how the Framers of the Constitution divided American government to create a democracy. a) Describe and give examples of the two systems in place that protect against one branch having too much power. b) Why are these systems important to American democracy?

The Framers of the Constitution divided American government into three branches: the executive, legislative, and judicial. This created a better democracy because the power is not concentrated within one branch or in the hands of a few.

The systems in
place that protect against one branch having too much power is called "separation of powers" and "checks and balances." This system keeps each branch from getting too powerful by limiting its powers. For example, the legislative branch can pass a law but the president veto it. That's a way the executive branch checks the legislative. And let's say the legislature really wants to pass that law, so they vote on it. With 2/3 majority of votes for the law, Congress can override the president's veto. That's a way the legislative branch checks on the executive. And let's say that although that law was passed by the legislature, some say that it's unconstitutional. If that happens, then the judicial branch checks out the law and can declare it unconstitutional. If it's declared unconstitutional, then the law will be no longer enforced or valid. That's a way the judicial branch checks the other branches.

Other examples of "checks and balances" is how the president is in charge of the armed forces, but only Congress can declare war. The judicial branch interprets laws and their constitutionality, but the president appoint the federal judges. The president appoints the federal judges, but the legislative branch has to approve those officials. The legislative branch also decides how many judges would be in the Supreme Court. The president can veto and the judicial can repeal laws, but the legislature can impeach the president and federal judges/officials.

These systems are important to American democracy because they keep the government from getting too powerful and oppressing the people.
